Compactor / Roller Inspection Checklist

OSHA 1926.602 daily for vibratory and smooth-drum rollers / padfoot compactors. The water-system check matters on asphalt — without water, the drum picks up mat material.

WHAT IT IS

The Compactor / Roller Inspection Checklist, explained.

The compactor / roller inspection checklist is the daily compactor inspection built to OSHA 1926.602. It runs 3 sections and roughly 17 pass / fail / N A checkpoints — covering Drum & Water System, Vibration / Padfoot Mechanism, and Operator Controls. Download the free printable sampleto put on a clipboard today — it's a basic quick-reference. The real power is running it in the DigiDocs app, where this becomes a fully customizable, 17-point digital inspection: every failure auto-creates a deficiency routed to your mechanic, photos attach on the spot, the operator e-signs, and each completed inspection becomes a signed, timestamped audit-trail record your auditor will accept without a fight.

This template is organized into 3 sections totaling roughly 17 Pass / Fail / N/A items. Clone it and tune fields to match your exact equipment configuration.

CREW · WHO RUNS THIS

Asphalt paving crews, road builders, utility-trench backfill teams, foundation pad compactors, landfill operators. Cat, Bomag, Sakai, Hamm, Volvo, Dynapac single-drum and tandem-drum rollers, plus padfoot compactors for cohesive soils. Daily 1926.602 before each shift the machine runs.

FIELD · INTEL

What inspectors catch most.

Pulled from competent-person write-ups in the field — not from a regulation digest. These are the items that fail the daily check more than any others.

  1. 01

Water-spray nozzles clogged — drum picks up asphalt mat on the next pass

  2. 02

Vibration eccentric-weight bearing noise — failure mode is drum lockup mid-cycle

  3. 03

Padfoot tip wear past replacement spec — compaction force not transferring to the lift

  4. 04

ROPS or seat-belt missing — single-most-cited compactor finding after a rollover

  5. 05

Articulation-joint grease ports dry; bushing wear accelerates

OSHA · ENFORCEMENT

What a citation costs.

OSHA Serious: up to $16,131 per violation (2026 maxima). Willful or Repeat: up to $161,323. Roller rollovers on slopes (especially backfilling around utilities) are the dominant fatal-incident class — ROPS and seat-belt inspections are non-negotiable daily items.

THE PAPER SAMPLE VS · THE REAL THING

The PDF is the clipboard.
DigiDocs is the system.

A printable checklist still relies on someone remembering to do it, store it, and find it when an auditor or insurer asks. The same compactor / rollerinspection in DigiDocs runs on the phone already in your operator's pocket — and turns a checkbox into a defensible compliance record the moment it's signed. Every field is yours to customize.

Every line item, not just sections

The full template carries all ~17 checkpoints with the OSHA / FMCSA / ASME citation on each — the sample only shows the section headers.

Photo proof on every failure

Operators attach a photo the instant something fails, so the defect is documented at the point of inspection — not reconstructed later.

Failures become mechanic work orders

Every Fail auto-creates a deficiency routed to your mechanic dashboard, with repair notes and auto-verify on the next inspection.

Red-tag / operability built in

Operator marks Operable / Non-Operable per OSHA 1926.1417; critical fails can lock the asset out of service automatically.

Signed, timestamped, permanent

Operator e-signature on submit; every completed inspection becomes an audit-trail PDF and a shareable, revocable customer link.

Make it yours

Rename fields, add sections, set conditional logic, schedule recurrences, and white-label it — no two fleets inspect exactly alike.

FREQUENTLY · ASKED

Compactor / Roller, in practice.

Why does the water system matter on a roller?

On asphalt, the drum surface gets hot enough to fuse with the asphalt mat — without a continuous water spray, the drum picks up material and creates a pulled-stone defect in the mat. The daily verifies water flow and that the operator knows how to refill the tank.

What's the difference between a smooth drum and a padfoot?

Smooth drums compact granular materials (asphalt, sand, gravel) by pressure and vibration. Padfoot drums use protruding 'pads' to knead cohesive soils (clay, silt) from below, breaking apart clods and densifying the lift. Wrong drum on the wrong soil = no compaction.

Is the vibration mechanism dangerous?

When it fails on a high-amplitude setting, yes — bearing seizure during full vibration can lock the drum and skid the machine sideways. The daily checks for unusual bearing noise and verifies the vibration on/off control works at both settings.

Can rollers operate on slope?

Up to the manufacturer's slope rating, typically 15-25° depending on the model. Many backfill incidents happen at the edge of a backfilled trench where the operator misjudges the slope; the daily includes a check that the slope indicator (if equipped) is functional.

Who can operate a roller?

A trained operator. OSHA doesn't require a separate certification beyond competent-person training. Most contractors document training through internal sign-off; trade-union apprenticeship programs typically include compactor operation in the curriculum.
