Overhead / Gantry Crane Inspection Checklist

ASME B30.2 daily check for top-running and under-running overhead and gantry cranes. Compact 3-section template because bridge cranes have fewer movable structural elements than mobiles or towers — the action is in the hoist and limit-switch verification.

WHAT IT IS

The Overhead / Gantry Crane Inspection Checklist, explained.

The overhead / gantry crane inspection checklist is the daily overhead crane inspection built to ASME B30.2. It runs 3 sections and roughly 15 pass / fail / N A checkpoints — covering Bridge & Trolley Travel, Hoist & Limit Switches, and Operator & Controls. Download the free printable sampleto put on a clipboard today — it's a basic quick-reference. The real power is running it in the DigiDocs app, where this becomes a fully customizable, 15-point digital inspection: every failure auto-creates a deficiency routed to your mechanic, photos attach on the spot, the operator e-signs, and each completed inspection becomes a signed, timestamped audit-trail record your auditor will accept without a fight.

This template is organized into 3 sections totaling roughly 15 Pass / Fail / N/A items. Clone it and tune fields to match your exact equipment configuration.

CREW · WHO RUNS THIS

Manufacturing, steel-fabrication shops, precast yards, paper mills, metal-service centers, rail-car shops — anywhere a top-running bridge crane or under-running monorail moves loads inside a building. Outdoor gantry cranes at scrap yards and shipyards run the same daily even though they're not enclosed.

FIELD · INTEL

What inspectors catch most.

Pulled from competent-person write-ups in the field — not from a regulation digest. These are the items that fail the daily check more than any others.

  1. 01

Upper-limit switch sticking or not actuating — hoist runs into the drum stops

  2. 02

Festoon cable abrasion at a sharp turn in the runway

  3. 03

End-truck wheel flange wear creating skewed bridge travel

  4. 04

Hook latch missing or sprung open from impact

  5. 05

Pendant-station cable strain relief pulling out at the molded grip

OSHA · ENFORCEMENT

What a citation costs.

ASME B30.2 is incorporated into OSHA 1910.179 (general industry overhead cranes). Serious: up to $16,131 (2026); Willful or Repeat: up to $161,323. Overhead-crane incidents draw OSHA general-duty citations when the cause traces to skipped daily inspections — drop incidents are the most common write-up category.

THE PAPER SAMPLE VS · THE REAL THING

The PDF is the clipboard.
DigiDocs is the system.

A printable checklist still relies on someone remembering to do it, store it, and find it when an auditor or insurer asks. The same overhead / gantry craneinspection in DigiDocs runs on the phone already in your operator's pocket — and turns a checkbox into a defensible compliance record the moment it's signed. Every field is yours to customize.

Every line item, not just sections

The full template carries all ~15 checkpoints with the OSHA / FMCSA / ASME citation on each — the sample only shows the section headers.

Photo proof on every failure

Operators attach a photo the instant something fails, so the defect is documented at the point of inspection — not reconstructed later.

Failures become mechanic work orders

Every Fail auto-creates a deficiency routed to your mechanic dashboard, with repair notes and auto-verify on the next inspection.

Red-tag / operability built in

Operator marks Operable / Non-Operable per OSHA 1926.1417; critical fails can lock the asset out of service automatically.

Signed, timestamped, permanent

Operator e-signature on submit; every completed inspection becomes an audit-trail PDF and a shareable, revocable customer link.

Make it yours

Rename fields, add sections, set conditional logic, schedule recurrences, and white-label it — no two fleets inspect exactly alike.

FREQUENTLY · ASKED

Overhead / Gantry Crane, in practice.

What's the difference between an overhead crane and a gantry crane?

Overhead cranes run on rails attached to building structure (columns, roof trusses). Gantry cranes carry their own legs — rails are on the floor and the structure rolls along. Otherwise they're mechanically the same and inspect the same way.

Do I need to test the limit switches every day?

Functional verification, yes — typically by running the hoist up to actuation with no load and watching for shutdown. Full calibration testing is monthly/quarterly. The daily catches the gross failures (stuck, bypassed, miswired); periodic catches the drift.

Who's qualified to run the daily on a bridge crane?

The trained operator. ASME B30.2 doesn't require a separate inspector for the daily. OSHA 1910.179 requires the operator be 'qualified by training and experience' — companies typically document training internally with sign-off, not a third-party certification.

What's the most-cited overhead-crane finding?

Missing hook latches. The latch keeps a sling from jumping out of the throat under wrap angle change — when it's gone, every lift is a dropped-load risk. The daily catches it; replacement is a 30-second swap with a manufacturer-spec part.

How often does the wire rope on an overhead crane need replacement?

Same broken-wire criteria as mobile cranes (ASME criteria: 6 in one rope-lay or 3 in one strand). Overhead cranes in clean-shop environments often run wire rope 5-10 years; outdoor gantries see faster wear from corrosion. The daily inspects; the periodic measures.
